RBS open day at the 2024 construction site, Bern

Regionalverkehr Bern-Solothurn (RBS) is part of the Swiss public transport system and the Bern S-Bahn. RBS transports 26.2 million passengers a year on four railroad lines and 18 bus routes. This makes it one of the busiest private railroads in Switzerland.

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, RBS, SBB and the City of Bern opened the gates to the major construction site of the new RBS station to the general public. A total of around 18,000 interested people visited the "Open Construction Site Day". The highlight was the first public access to the new RBS station, which is currently under construction - a milestone for everyone involved and an impressive experience for the guests.

Initial situation/requirements:

As a long-standing technical partner of RBS, Kilchenmann was involved in both fixed installations and the tunnel breakthrough event. For the "Open Construction Site Day", Kilchenmann once again assumed overall responsibility for the technical planning, coordination and implementation of the event - from conception to successful execution.

Technical implementation:

An exclusive VIP event was held in the tunnel on Friday evening. Kilchenmann provided the complete technical infrastructure: a powerful sound system, professional microphones, control room workstations, information displays and atmospheric lighting along the 1.5 km long tour. In the north and south caverns, additional lighting and audio productions were realized - including an off-screen voice that greeted the guests as a mystical "tunnel spirit" and provided exciting insights into everyday construction work.

The main event for the public followed on Saturday. Kilchenmann illuminated the tunnel areas and installed numerous information displays at strategically important points to provide visitors with an informative and safe experience.

The logistical challenges were enormous: event technology had to be brought in via Laupenstrasse using a crane as well as via the Eilgut area within a very short space of time. An experienced team of around 23 specialists ensured that everything ran smoothly - from set-up to rehearsals and execution to dismantling. A total of around 17 tons of material was used - a feat that required maximum precision and teamwork.

Conclusion

The "Open Construction Site Day" was a complete success - both for the organizers and for the public. Kilchenmann was once again able to demonstrate its strengths in complex technical event implementation. Such projects illustrate the importance of well-coordinated processes, creative planning and reliable partners in order to implement extraordinary events in public spaces safely and impressively.
