The Schauspielhaus Zurich is Switzerland's largest stage for spoken theatre and one of the most renowned theatres in the German-speaking world. With the traditional Pfauen in Zurich-Hottingen and the Schiffbau in Zurich-West, which opened in 2000, it now has two large houses in two districts.
In the Schiffbau, in the Escher-Wyss area, Kilchenmann was allowed to install an outdoor LED wall at the entrance gate to the foyer. This replaces the classic banners announcing events and exhibitions.
Consisting of 272 LED strips, this results in a total size of 6m wide and 3.40m high with a pixel pitch of 25mm. The total resolution of the wall is 240x136 pixels. The LED strips have been installed in front of the glazing of the gates on the outside. The wall is slightly transparent. For the installation, bracket rails were produced and mounted on the gate. Then each individual strip was mounted on the brackets.
To ensure that the gate in the middle can still be opened, the LED wall consists of two parts. This content also plays out when the gate is open. All the electronics are mounted in two metal housings on the inside of the gate. The image signal is played out from a digital signage player in native resolution.
The LED wall runs according to a predefined operating time and the brightness is adjusted to the current sunlight by means of a light sensor so that the image always appears equally "bright".
