A peek behind the scenes at the Kursaal in Bern: our interview with Thomas Burgunder shows how partnership, well-established processes, and a strong team shape the day-to-day operations of the event.

Since the beginning of the year, Kilchenmann has been the technical partner of the Kursaal in Bern. But what does this partnership mean in practice? How does the collaboration work behind the scenes, and what really matters in the day-to-day running of an event?

An interview with Thomas Burgunder, on-site Venue Service team leader.

The hub behind the scenes

Thomas Burgunder has been the Venue Service team leader at the Kursaal in Bern since early 2026. In the months leading up to that, he was already heavily involved in preparing for the technical renovations and the first events.

In his day-to-day work, he plays a central role: "I see my role as a hub. It’s about maintaining an overview, ensuring coordination, and making sure that both the team and our clients* receive the best possible support."

In this context, his team works largely independently. Clear responsibilities, short decision-making channels, a shared understanding, and close communication characterize their daily work. Many decisions are made directly on site and are supplemented in a targeted manner through structured consultations and regular meetings within the Kilchenmann team, as well as with the Kursaal in Bern and clients*.

A Day in the Life at the Venue: What Really Goes On Behind the Scenes of an Event

An event at the Kursaal in Bern begins long before the first guests arrive. For the technical team, the day starts with a joint briefing, followed by technical tests, rehearsals, and detailed fine-tuning.

"A large part of our work happens behind the scenes—for example, logistics, transporting equipment, or the entire setup and takedown process. Clients* are often unaware of this, but it is crucial for a smooth operation and a successful event." It is precisely during these phases that you can seehow well a team works together. "You can especially see whether the planning was successful: the timing, the procedures, and the logistics must be precisely coordinated."

On-site technical partners: Collaboration during the day-to-day operations of the event

As a permanent technical partner, Kilchenmann is an integral part of the Kursaal Bern’s operations. The collaboration goes far beyond the traditional role of a service provider.“We regularly communicate with the Kursaal team and openly discuss feedback, requirements, and opportunities for improvement. What matters most is that everyone is working toward a common goal. And that is exactly what we see every day."

This close collaboration is a hallmark of our daily work. Processes fit together seamlessly, responsibilities are clearly defined, and at the same time, we support one another beyond our own areas of expertise. "If something catches our attention, we talk about it—even if it doesn't fall directly within our own area of responsibility. That is precisely what defines a successful partnership."

In the events industry, there are always situations that require a great deal of flexibility, such as last-minute adjustments or changes during an ongoing event. "It's in those moments that you see whether we truly function as a team. That's when everyone pitches in—from the technical team to management and the kitchen staff."

Added value for customers*.

For clients*, this close collaboration is immediately apparent, particularly during the planning phase. "We get involved in discussions very early on and can provide comprehensive advice in collaboration with the Kursaal team. This creates transparency and makes planning much easier for clients*."

A key focus is on safety. "Requirements—particularly regarding fire protection—have increased significantly and have become even more important. For us, this has always been standard practice. Our task is to provide timely advice and, in collaboration with our clients*, develop solutions that comply with safety regulations while remaining practical."

Why Everything Has to Be Perfect in a Live Performance

In the events industry, there are no second chances. For Thomas Burgunder, this principle is at the heart of his concept of quality.

"In live operations, there is a clearly defined moment when everything must function perfectly. We cannot always control external circumstances, but the responsibility for ensuring that everything runs smoothly remains entirely ours."

It is precisely in moments like these that we realize just how crucial on-site experience is. Having a detailed understanding of the infrastructure, processes, and on-site capabilities allows us to respond more quickly, identify risks in a timely manner, and implement targeted solutions.

Partnership at the Kursaal in Bern: A Collaboration on Equal Terms

When asked what makes a partnership work, Thomas Burgunder has a clear answer: "Trust, respect, and open communication. You have to understand how the other person works and what their underlying needs are."

He describes the collaboration with the Kursaal Bern as "solution-oriented, on equal terms, and as a true team."

Beyond all the professionalism, the personal touch remains important. "The Kursaal Bern is a venue steeped in history, with many long-time employees and regular customers. That defines the partnership. And quite honestly, the view is definitely one of the most beautiful in Bern."

Looking ahead, Thomas Burgunder is most looking forward to one thing: "Many more successful events together with a strong team."

Conclusion

The partnership between the Kursaal in Bern and Kilchenmann is a prime example of what matters in modern event management: clearly defined processes, well-established procedures, and collaboration on an equal footing. Quality stems not only from technology, but also—and above all—from people who work together to fulfill their responsibilities.
